Soldier Field

Soldier Field's neighborhood is the Museum Campus rather than a traditional bar-and-restaurant district — the immediate footprint is parkland, the lakefront trail, and the city's three major science-and-natural-history museums. South Loop and the Printers Row area are a short walk west with restaurants and bars in restored loft buildings, and the Roosevelt Road corridor connects toward the Loop. McCormick Place convention center sits a short distance south. For pre-game eating, fans typically either tailgate in the stadium lots, eat in South Loop, or head into the Loop or West Loop and ride down. The lakefront trail itself offers one of the best stadium-approach walks in American sports — the path runs north along the water with the Chicago skyline ahead.

Plan to arrive 3+ hours before kickoff for Bears games if you want to tailgate, or 90 minutes before if you're going in directly. The lakefront trail walk south from the Loop is a memorable approach. Soldier Field is one of the smallest stadiums in the NFL by capacity, so sightlines are generally strong but tickets to high-demand games are correspondingly limited. The stadium is fully open-air and exposed to Chicago weather — late-season games can be punishing. Mobile-only ticketing is standard and the NFL clear-bag policy is enforced strictly. For Fire matches, the bowl curtains off the upper deck — confirm seating layout before booking.

Soldier Field is the oldest active NFL stadium, originally opened in 1924 as a memorial to American soldiers killed in World War I and earlier conflicts. The original Greek-revival colonnades on the east and west sides of the building remain visible. A controversial 2003 renovation inserted a modern asymmetric seating bowl inside the original colonnades — the federal government subsequently removed Soldier Field's National Historic Landmark designation as a result of the renovation. The seating capacity of roughly 61,500 makes it the smallest stadium in the NFL by a meaningful margin. The Bears organization has openly explored relocation in recent years (to Arlington Heights and elsewhere) but no move has been finalized, and Soldier Field remains the home stadium. The Chicago Fire FC returned to Soldier Field in 2020 after a stint in Bridgeview, and the stadium also regularly hosts the international Concacaf Gold Cup, the World Cup qualifying matches, major concerts, and college football.
