About GameAway

We Are You

We grew up obsessed with sports of every kind — whatever game our parents would take us to, we were there. We had sisters who taught us to love hockey and Duran Duran in the same breath — go Thunderbirds, go Monarchs. We had parents who always seemed to find a connection in whatever random city we landed in, scoring tickets to an interleague Orioles-Mets game and leaving early because dad wanted to beat the traffic — only to watch the O's mount a comeback on the hotel TV before we even got our shoes off.

As adults, we owned season tickets in every city we lived in. Baseball, hockey, football, whatever was on. We are the ones sneaking a game in on a business trip. The ones who love three different sports and want to make a week of it. The mom at Disneyland who just discovered the Angels are playing a home game that afternoon.

Some of our best memories have a ticket stub attached. A Carolina League game at 21 — not for the baseball, honestly, but for the $1 drafts. Newlyweds at a Coastal Plain League game with a $20 bill that somehow covered two tickets, parking, two beers, two slices of pizza, and a bag of boiled peanuts. A Cubs World Series. A Blackhawks Stanley Cup. A Wake Forest ACC football championship (yes, it happened). Our oldest daughter went to more games in her first year of life than we did before turning 18. Covid took that from our youngest, but she still lights up at every game and every match we take her to.

Then there was the Chicago Wolves game. All you wanted was a beer and a hockey game — five years away from one of your favorite teams, a simple night out. You sent your wife and kids to walk around the concourse. They came back with a dog. An actual dog. A mutt from an adoption event who proceeded to ruin your life for a full year before you fell completely in love with her. That is sports. That is what happens when you show up.

We have sat in the high banks at Daytona, sweated through mid-summer nights at short tracks like Bowman Gray and Caraway, frozen at the Liberty Bowl, and discovered — with genuine shock — that Notre Dame stadium does not serve beer. We watched our wives in sundresses at the US Open at Kiawah on a day so brutally hot it was too warm to even drink a beer. We have watched Bundesliga in Leverkusen, SHL hockey in Växjö, European football showcases in Chicago, USL matches in Hamtramck, and collegiate summer league games in Madison. And somehow through all of it, we landed on a deep love of Detroit sports. Hey — if you are already a Wake Forest fan, what is a little Lions misery on top?

Honestly, there are too many memories to list. That is exactly the point. We have seen enough of this world to know there are a lot of people out there like us. GameAway is built out of respect for all of you, and to help you build that next game, that next trip and that next memory.
