Polar Park

Polar Park anchored a transformation of Worcester's Canal District — the former industrial blocks south of downtown along the buried Blackstone Canal — into a walkable mixed-use district when it opened in 2021. The blocks immediately around the ballpark are restaurants, bars, and new residential mixed in with longstanding neighborhood institutions. Kelley Square, the famously chaotic five-way intersection just north of the park (reconfigured to a peanut-roundabout in the ballpark development), is the canonical neighborhood landmark. Shrewsbury Street — Worcester's longstanding Italian restaurant row — sits a short ride northeast and is the city's destination dining corridor. The Canal District at large reads as Worcester's most-improved neighborhood of the past decade, with Polar Park as the catalyst.

Plan to arrive about 45 minutes to an hour before first pitch — the Canal District walk-up is gentle on most dates and busier on fireworks Fridays. The WooSox relocated from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where the franchise had been the Pawtucket Red Sox at the legendary McCoy Stadium since 1973 — the move to Worcester in 2021 (delayed a year by COVID) ended a half-century Rhode Island run and gave Massachusetts its second Red Sox-affiliated ballpark. Polar Park is named for Polar Beverages, the Worcester-headquartered soft-drink company. The ballpark sits at a noticeable elevation change with the Worcester Wall in left field — a Green-Monster-evoking design touch. Mobile-only tickets are the norm. Polar Park opened in May 2021 as the new home of the Worcester Red Sox (the WooSox), the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. The franchise relocated from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where it had played as the Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium continuously since 1973 — the longest single-city Triple-A residency at relocation. The naming-rights deal with Polar Beverages, the Worcester-based soft-drink company founded in 1882, was announced before the park's opening. The capacity is about 9,508 with a 360-degree concourse, the Worcester Wall in left field (a Green Monster-style high wall echoing Fenway), the DCU Club behind home plate, and group berms in the outfield. The Canal District redevelopment around the park is widely cited as one of the more successful ballpark-as-urban-catalyst projects of the past decade. The ballpark was designed by Pendulum Studio and constructed in roughly two years.
