Chase Field

The blocks around Chase Field are downtown Phoenix's sports-and-events spine — the Mortgage Matchup Center (Suns) sits one block west, the Phoenix Convention Center and the downtown hotel cluster anchor the area immediately northwest, and Roosevelt Row's arts district sits a short walk north. The neighborhood has densified considerably over the past decade with new apartments, brewery taprooms, and restaurants moving into formerly vacant retail. CityScape, a mixed-use development between the ballpark and the convention center, houses several restaurants and bars and absorbs much of the pre-game foot traffic. Travelers can pair a game with Heritage Square, the Children's Museum of Phoenix, or a walk through Roosevelt Row's gallery and mural blocks.

Plan to arrive an hour before first pitch — the retractable roof is closed for almost all games from late spring through early fall, but the air-conditioned bowl makes Chase one of the most comfortable summer ballpark experiences in MLB. The Diamondbacks installed a permanent swimming pool beyond the right-field wall as a private suite — it's a canonical first-time photo target. The Friday's Front Row Sports Grill in left field is the only in-ballpark restaurant with field-level views during games. Mobile-only tickets and cash-free concessions are the norm; download tickets in advance. Chase Field opened in March 1998 as Bank One Ballpark (locally 'the BOB'), was renamed Chase Field in 2005 after JPMorgan Chase acquired Bank One. It was the first MLB park built with a retractable roof over natural grass — a combination later copied at Minute Maid Park (now Daikin Park) and Marlins Park. The roof and the air-conditioning system were essential for summer baseball in Phoenix and remain the building's defining feature. The Diamondbacks have shifted playing surfaces multiple times across the park's history — natural grass for the opening years, then a switch to Shaw Sports B1K synthetic turf in 2019 because of the closed-roof shade conditions and the difficulty of growing grass under a closed roof through the summer. The right-field swimming pool — the only one inside any MLB park — is a defining design quirk and a private rental suite during games. The Diamondbacks won the 2001 World Series at the park (their fourth season as a franchise) and made the World Series again in 2023.
