Buzzard Point was a working industrial waterfront until very recently — the stadium's 2018 opening anchored a redevelopment of the southwestern Anacostia waterfront that is still filling in. The peninsula at the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers gives the venue a distinct riverfront setting. Walk east along the riverfront and you connect to Nationals Park, the Yards Park, and the broader Navy Yard restaurant cluster within 15–20 minutes. The Wharf — DC's other major recent waterfront redevelopment with the Anthem concert hall, Pearl Street Warehouse, and a dense restaurant lineup — sits a short walk north across the Washington Channel and pairs naturally with a match. The blocks immediately around the stadium itself remain sparser than Navy Yard's pre-game corridor, so most visitors anchor their pre-match plans in Navy Yard or The Wharf.

Plan around the supporters' end — DC United's Screaming Eagles and District Ultras anchor the supporters' section behind one goal and lead chants throughout the match; the atmosphere on that end is the building's identity. Arrive at least 60 minutes before kickoff on weekend matches. Audi Field is open-air with no roof — the riverfront location means weather can swing hard in shoulder months; dress for the forecast. The Washington Spirit (NWSL) have used Audi Field for select high-demand home matches in past seasons (with primary home at Audi Field or other DC-area venues depending on season); confirm specific match venue before attending. Mobile-only tickets are the norm. The clubs publish current bag policy on their official sites — check before traveling.

Audi Field opened in July 2018 as the permanent home of DC United, ending the club's long tenure at RFK Stadium — the multipurpose concrete bowl that had been the club's home since the founding of MLS in 1996. The stadium is purpose-built as a soccer-specific venue and the Buzzard Point peninsula location at the confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers is the building's distinct visual setting. DC United is one of MLS's founding clubs and remains the league's most-decorated franchise from its earliest years, with four MLS Cup titles (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004) — all won during the RFK era. The Washington Spirit (NWSL) have played selected matches at Audi Field in recent seasons in addition to their primary home venue; the club's home-venue allocation has shifted year to year. The Wayne Rooney signing era in 2018 and the Lionel Messi 2023 home visits have anchored the stadium's most-watched moments to date.
